One of the most difficult decisions any family faces is the decision to place an elderly family member into a nursing home some type of an assisted living facility. There are not many of us who have not heard our parents or our grandparents say at one time or another I'd rather be dead than in a nursing home. This type of statement is based on nothing more than a simple stereotype. The truth is that there are many outstanding extended care facilities that provide home-like atmospheres, well qualified staff and great support for seniors. If you have an aging family member who is struggling to live alone and is suffering from health problems of some sort, then maybe you and your family are considering placing that person into a nursing home. This is a very common and sometimes very difficult decision for most families to make, but it is often the best option for ensuring that your loved one is well cared for and safe. When searching for an appropriate nursing home you should first look at the different care facilities that are nearby. It is always best to place your loved one in a home that is close to relatives so that the family can visit often. Many elderly people have a difficult time making the transition from total independence into a nursing home. Having family nearby helps greatly in reducing the stress involved with the move and will go a long way toward making a fairly smooth transition for all involved. Once you have found a list of nursing homes that are nearby, you should then make an appointment to visit each of the homes. Be sure to ask for their latest inspection reports as these are very good indicators as to the type of care they provide. If a home has been cited more than a couple of times, take note and then move on to the next home. Ask what type of medical staff is on duty at the home and inquire about the types of activities they offer to their residents. The best nursing homes are clean, they do not smell like urine and they are staffed with very understanding and kind people. Do not neglect to check the menus and even ask to eat a meal at the home. If the nursing home has nothing to hide then they will gladly welcome you to join them for lunch.About the Author:
