There are three types of elephants living today. They are

3}. the Asian Elephant.

The Asian elephant is also known as the Indian elephant.

At birth an elephant calf weighs around 120 kilograms. Their life duration is about 50 70 years. The oldest recorded elephant lived for 82 years.

In Asian countries the elephant is a mark of wisdom.. Elephants are famous for their memory and intelligence.

The elephant is hunted and killed largely for its ivory. Ivory is very costly.

Adult elephants have no predators. But lions harass the young elephants. Elephants skin is very thick. Its about 2.5 centimeters thick and tremendously tough. The skin inside the elephants ear and around its mouth is paper thin.

Elephants love wallowing and it is a very important behavior in their society. The mud acts as a sunscreen and shield their skin from harsh ultraviolet radiation. When communicating, elephants make various sounds Elephants blow through its nostrils and make a noisy noise and this is called trumpeting. Trumpeting is made usually when the animal is excited. When greeting each other they make rumbling growls.

Elephants are herbivores, and they expend up to 16 hours a day eating plants. They eat leaves, bark and fruit of trees and shrubs. They also eat grass and herbs. Elephants grasp approximately 40% of what they eat. An adult elephant has 140 270 kilograms of food a day.

The elephants trunk is its most important and multitalented appendage. African elephants have two fingers like projections at the tip of their trunk where as the Asian elephant have only one. Except for the very young ones, elephants always use their trunks to tear up their food and then put it in their mouth. Elephants will graze on grass or they will reach up into trees to grasp l eaves, fruit and branches.
