This type of procedure is usually done on small moles that have well defined borders and color and have been deemed to be safe and non cancerous by medical personnel. It consists of the doctor removing the mole and base with a scalpel after numbing the area by injecting an anesthetic and cleaning the area with a antibacterial solution. When the skin tag is gone the doctor has a couple of options to choose from. Depending on the size of the wound he or she will either stitch it up or simply put a bandage over it to let it heal. Stitches can sometimes be non permanent that dissolve and do not require a return visit to remove. If there is reason to suspect that there might be malignancy, samples from the cutout part of the blemish can be sent to a laboratory for evaluation. Since the procedure is very simple it can be performed in small outpatient clinics and even by home calling doctors.
Shaving
A shaving procedure cuts away the top layer of the mole in a similar fashion to shaving with a razor. It can be beneficial since it heals easier and quicker than a base excision and requires no stitches at all. As in the methods above the area around the mole will be numbed with anesthesia and cleaned before the procedure. This procedure is cost effective. It can leave some darker skin since the base of the mole is still remaining in your skin. The procedure is quick and can be used to take samples from the mole to check for cancers.
Laser Mole Removal
This procedure is similar to normal scalpel excision except that a laser is used to cut instead of a scalpel. The benefits of this method is that it has the lowest risk of scarring. Unfortunately this method can be a bit pricey compared to the other ones, especially if you have multiple moles to remove.
