What is Domestic Assault?

In cases of domestic assault, authorities are often called in order to mediate the situation and to protect those affected by domestic assault. In many cases, police intervention is called in order to help resolve the conflict or to remove one or more members from the home if necessary. Domestic assault victims may be encouraged to seek medical help or to stay with friends, family or a temporary shelter. Those committing the assault may be given a warning, or in some cases, arrested. Those arrested may face prosecution for domestic assault depending upon the severity or duration of the assault. Agencies have been formed in order to help victims of domestic assault find a safe place to live as well as helping them to be able to cope with the stress that may occur as a result of abuse. This may include women's shelters that can help to provide temporary assistance for both women and children who are victims of domestic assault. Some shelters may also help victims find legal advice if it is necessary to file a restraining order or press charges against their abuser. For cases that include sexual assault, victims may be encouraged to seek medical care and advice in order to help determine proof of assault.
