subject: What Are Some Common Sites For Liposuction? [print this page]

Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) is a procedure which works to remove fat from specific problem areas in the body. By removing small fat deposits, this surgery allows a person to become trimmer, slimmer and more attractive.

While this procedure is not well-suited to large volume or total body weight loss, it can perform quite impressively when targeting relatively small areas. This is great news for people who live a generally healthy lifestyle and who are in generally good health, but who have one or two areas where they just can't seem to lose a few pounds. Sometimes, a person can exercise and diet and lose weight throughout almost all of their body, but there will still be one or two areas that just stubbornly hang on.

Everybody's body is unique and different, which means that people store their fat in different places, making unique problem areas for each person. However, there are some general trends, and there are some places where people are most apt to store excess fat. These spots are, obviously, the most popular places for lipoplasty.

One common place where men and women both tend to get liposuction is on the abdomen. Although men tend not to naturally store as much fat as women, men are genetically predisposed to carry most of their weight around their abdomens. There are a lot of different words for extra abdominal fat: beer belly, spare tire, love handles. All of these can be improved by removing fat from the belly or flanks.

Women also frequently get lipectomies which target the abdomen. Many women put on some amount of abdominal fat throughout their lives, and they are especially likely to do this during pregnancy. However, the belly does not tend to be one of the curves which American culture prizes in women. When women have a hard time losing abdominal fat, they frequently turn to lipoplasty.

Some other popular areas for women are the thighs, hips and buttocks. Some women store large amounts of fat around their buttocks and by their hips. Some store large amounts in different parts of their thighs (creating the "thunder thigh" effect). In general, American society seems to prize the hourglass figure more than the pear shaped figure. Having large amounts of fat around one's thighs, hips and butt can make a woman feel that she is bottom heavy. Removing that fat can sometimes help to balance out a figure.

There are a number of other areas where people of both genders undergo lipoplasties, including the breasts, the arms, the face and the neck. In fact, the surgery can usually be performed almost anywhere there is excess fat near the surface.
