A French book can ask you questions but it can't give you a selection of possible answers and then lead you to the next question depending on your choice. It can't play French learning games with you, etc.
French software downloads can do precisely that. They can keep you or your kids entertained so that at times you start to forget you are learning French and are just entertained by the process. It makes learning French at home something that the whole family can do, and that they look forward to. There's nothing that puts people off learning more than when it becomes a chore.
The other big advantage with some of today's courses is that they supply French MP3 files. With those, you take take some of the French lessons with you wherever you go. You can carry on learning in the car, jogging, on the train, even on the plane to France perhaps!
