iPad takes touch technology a step further

For more than 40 years, we've been "clicking" at our computers with an evolving little critter called the mouse. "The supremacy the mouse has had is going," said Steve Prentice, a vice president at Gartner, an information VGP-BPS9 technology research company in the United Kingdom. "The user interface is changing, and so the computer with its mouse and keyboard starts to look a little like a loner."

The technology is not new, but the iPad's successful release earlier this month and a new wave of similar tablets is said to be chasing the mouse out of homes.Reid Walley, 45, of Sacramento, gave away his home computer in 2005 and bought a laptop. (The iPad takes Sony VGP-BPS9A/B touch technology a step further, allowing fingers to directly manipulate information, images and icons on the computer screen.)

The life coach also has a graphic-design company, using programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to make Sony VGP-BPS2A battery business cards and Web sites."Thirty-five years ago, computers were predominantly occupied with text and numbers," he said. "Now much of what we do is rich media, where the mouse is not a particularly good device."

If the mouse fades to extinction, will that be a cure to some of those painful repetitive-stress injuries? Probably not.Different types of repetitive injuries may emerge, said Marilyn Armbruster, a certified hand therapist at UC Davis Medical Center.

long with touch screens, gesture-controlled devices are poised to enter the latitude 131l battery market. A Hitachi television that replaces the remote control with arm gestures C such as a side swipe for changing channels C is set for release next year, said a spokeswoman from Gesturetek, the company that made its body-motion software.
