subject: An Over Active Bladder Could Be The Underlining Cause Of Urinary Incontinence In Men [print this page]

Many times, people as well as some physicians have

erroneously attributed benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarge

prostate) as the reason for urinary incontinence in men, when

in reality it is AOB or overactive bladder that's responsible.

Within the United

States alone, it is believed that there are between

twenty-five to thirty-five million people who suffer with OAB

and other forms or types of urinary incontinence.

An overactive bladder (OAB) has been responsible for many,

many

embarrassing and humiliating scenes for people all across the

USA and abroad. Time and time again, men who suffer from some

form/type of urinary incontinence has had to make a mad dash

across the room to the bathroom to avoid yet another

troublesome episode of 'life with an overactive bladder'.

Life with an overactive bladder is not the sole province of

men, instead, children, adolescent, young adults, as well as

senior citizens, both male and female, suffer with some type

of urinary incontinence;women make up the largest number of

any group that suffer with urinary incontinence.

An overactive bladder (OAB) can be traced back to a number of

causes, in most cases an overactive bladder can be

successfully treated. Listed below are several causes of OAB.

1.Medications--side effects from prescription drugs can

result in an overactive bladder, especially diuretics and

drugs that have caffeine it.

2.Bladder neck damaged during some type of surgery.

3.Collateral damage from a prostatecomy, or prostate surgery.

4.Spinal cord injury or some type of damage to the nervous

system.

5.Urinary tract infection to the kidneys, bladder, ureter

tubes, urethra and the sphincter muscle.

6.Diseases that affect the central nervous system; (a)

Parkinson disease,(b) multiple sclerosis, (c)Alzheimer,

(d)Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis "Lou Gehrig's disease" (d)

Cerebral palsy,(e) Muscular dystrophy,(f) Stroke

7.Prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarge

prostate)

8.Bladder cancer or a tumorous bladder

The kidneys are responsible for cleansing the blood in the

body by removing waste, excess water, and all other

impurities. The waste and excess water and other impurities

are turned into urine within the kidneys;urine is transported to the bladder for

storage via the ureter (2) tubes. Once the bladder is half

full or about two-thirds (66%) full, the brain will send a

nerve signal to the bladder to release all the urine that it

is storing. The moment that happens the detrusor muscle that

is located within the bladder (walls) will constrict

spastically and force the urine out of the bladder through

the urethra and out through the male sexual organ.

If there is some type of nerve damage the nerve signal will

be unable to notify the bladder to release the micturate

(urine) and the bladder will continue to fill. When the

bladder reaches full capacity and it is still unable to

release its content due to nerve damage, the urine will begin

to 'Overflow' and this will result in leakage. This type or

form of urinary incontinence is known as 'Overflow Incontinence'.

When the urinary tract is working well, once the nerve signal

is received by the bladder the detrusor muscle (located

inside the wall of the bladder) will constrict and force all

the urine out of the bladder. The urine will travel through

the urethra (a duct or tube) that is attached to the bottom

of the bladder and runs through the prostate gland and the

sphincter muscle and finally through the male organ and out

the body.

The sphincter muscle is located at the base of the bladder,

it encircles the bladder neck. If the sphincter muscle does not open up and

release its grip on the bottleneck of the bladder at the same time the

detrusor muscle is forcing the urine out of the bladder---the

urine won't be able to exist the bladder thereby preventing

urination. The sphincter muscle must be in synchronization

with the detrusor muscle or there will be a problem with

urination.

The sphincter muscle can become damaged from a previous

surgery, or it can become worn out from being over worked.

For instance, if there's a problem with the nerve signal and

the detrusor muscle begin constricting when it did not

receive the nerve signal to do so; the sphincter will

continue to hold its grip on the bladder's neck in an effort

to prevent leakage, but after too much of the detrusor rogue

behavior the sphincter will eventually lose its ability to

continue holding a firm grip, and voiding or leakage will

occur.

In most cases an overactive bladder (OAB) can be cured, and

in the cases where there is no cure, there are medical

procedures, medications, and a large number of urinary

incontinence products that are on the market to help almost

everyone with bladder problems live a full and dignified

existence without public and social embarrassment.

There are so many wonderful and well designed products to

help men live an active and energetic lifestyle. Products

like

men disposable diapers; men cloth diapers; men guards; men

pads; men incontinence underwear; urinals; catheters;

Cunningham clamps, and this in no way begins to exhaust the

list.

Today is a new day for people who suffer with an overactive

bladder (OAB), there is no reason for anyone to suffer in

isolation, secluded from the world because of fear that they

may have to endure yet another embarrassing and humiliating

scene. Today, things are so much better so go on and live.
