subject: College Do's & Donts good Roommate Relationship: Part 3 [print this page]

A good relationship with your roommate is important to lead a pleasant and supportive college life. This article is part 2 of the series that provides tips on how to connect well with your roommate and how to maintain a good relationship with your roommate.

Good Roommate Relationship Tip #6: Being friendly v/s being best friends

Be friendly with your roommate; however, expecting that you will be or should be best friends will only bring trouble for both of you. Many people find their best friend in their roommates but do not expect the same. Make other friends and have your own social life apart from your roommate.

Good Roommate Relationship Tip #7: Accept cultural differences

Your roommate may come from a different culture or different place with a religion, lifestyle, and attitude that differs from yours. Understand and accept these differences. Opening yourself to new ideas and experiences can be good for your learning. It would be an eye opener to know that your roommate comes from a place where they sleep hungry almost every other night.

Good Roommate Relationship Tip #8: Change with changing environment

During your college life, you are expected to grow and change and the same is bound to happen to your roommate as well. With changing environment and changes happening in both of you, you will come across new experiences. Things that you were intolerable to you earlier may now be fine with you and those that you were able to tolerate become unbearable to you. The same may be true of your roommate. It is important that you keep your communication lines open at all times and address new issues that come up.
