Geeks, Freaks, Goths and Other Outcasts: A Closer Look at Displaced Youth

Much time may be invested in fantasy, daydreams, and or abstract thought. It is not unusual to see these young people caught up in role-playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons, or any one of the many computer fantasy games. Reading, writing, and creating are other common pursuits that are preferred to human contact. These activities provide a sense of control and protection from the threat and repeated disappointments of their environment. A world is created in which they can reasonably manage if not control. They are no longer subject to the environment, but the environment is subject to them.
