subject: Going Green Quick And Simple [print this page]

Living green not only helps the environment; but also helps you to live without harmful toxins in your home. Even some small changes at home can make a positive impact on your health and the environment.

Organic mattresses are one way to improve your home environment. Of all the organic mattresses on the market today, latex mattresses are quite a popular choice. The reason why latex mattresses make a bigger impact on your environment than other types of organic mattresses is that latex mattresses actually inhibit the activity of dust mites. Dust mites are microscopic creatures that feed off of dead skin cells. Your mattress is therefore one of their favorite places to live. Because dust mites can cause issues with your respiratory system, changing your mattress is a quick and simple way to improve y our health.

Changing your mattress may seem like a big step to take to go green but here's the thing.. you are going to change your mattresses at some point in time. So now that you know there are organic choices out there that don't cost much more than a traditional mattress and box spring set - and that the choice is much healthier for you and your family - you may seek out those options when the time comes.

Part of going green at home is conservation. You can conserve water and electricity with just a few simple changes. Turning down your water heater is one way to use less electricity because your water heater will not run so high.

Some people really hate the thought of cutting their showers short; however, cutting down doesn't mean you have to be in and out in 5 minutes. If the military shower is not your cup of tea, perhaps you can cut your thirty minute shower down to a 20 minute shower. Small steps are all it takes and before you know it you will be conserving gallons of water every day. There are also low-flow shower heads that you can easily install into the showers of your home.

Electricity accounts for about sixty percent of the average home's utility bills. Most of that comes from the home's heating and cooling system. Changing the settings on your thermostat can be a quick and simple way to go green at home and save you money every month. In the cooler months, set the thermostat just a few degrees lower and in the hotter months, set it a few degrees higher. This way your system will not run as often.

Nobody really likes living in a hot house so not having the AC kicking can be a change you may resist. However, there are curtains available that block out heat and sun. Installing this type of curtain and some ceiling fans can keep you cool at home and still save energy.

There are plenty of things you can do to live a healthier, greener life. These are just some of the tips that can get you headed down the right path.
