Most people have a good idea what it means to have an allergy. Anyone who has experienced the sneezing that comes with hay fever or the throat tightening of a food allergy can certainly tell you.

The percentage of people who have some type of allergy is extremely high.

But many people do not know what they actually are. And they don't recognize the different types.

But, by understanding the different types, and what causes them, you are one step close to reducing their effects in your life. And, in some cases even eliminating them.

The important thing to remember is there are different types of allergies. And the effects are different.

But, there are similarities. All are caused by a reaction of your body to certain substances.

Allergies happen when your body treats these foreign materials inappropriately. Specifically, the immune system thinks these items are harmful. And then attacks them. Even though they are not harmful by themselves at all.

It is the immune system attacking these foreign bodies that cause the effects, not the foreign item itself.

Different types of allergies do cause different symptoms. One of the most common types is hay fever. Hay fever causes inflammation or irritation around the eyes and nose. This irritation causes sneezing. Hay fever is caused by a reaction with pollens, dust, pet dander and mold.

Asthma is also triggered by an allergic reaction. The symptoms of asthma are an swelling of the lungs and airways. You will often experience breathing problems and shortness of breath. It is caused by inhaling particles that cause the allergic reaction.

Food allergies are one of the most dangerous types of allergies. They can be fatal since they are eaten, and therefore very difficult to get rid of. Food allergies can range from irritation at the back of the throat, inside the ears or in the mouth, to severe swelling of the airway that can block breathing.

Another type of allergy is known as Allergic eczema. This is a rash that is caused when allergens are contacted. This rash can appear on the face, behind the knees, or on the inside of the elbow. These rashes are accompanied by redness, dry skin and itching.

While there are a number of different allergy types, they are all caused by the same thing. It is your bodies reaction to particles it thinks are harmful. Even if they are not.

Knowing the type of allergies differences, and what you are allergic to, is the first step in dealing with or eliminating them.

Talk to your doctor about your symptoms. Different "types" of have different treatments.

Sometimes you need a change in lifestyle, other times, medications are necessary.

Allergies range from minor to life threatening. If you, or someone you know has them, learn everything you can.
