subject: Business Electricity - How To Find The Best Deal [print this page]

The electricity demands of signage, lighting, HVAC systems and computers can be considerable when scaled up for dozens, hundreds or even thousands of employees. This expense can become particularly troubling when electricity prices fluctuate, both seasonably and unpredictably due to energy costs.

The deregulation of the electricity industry during the 1980s now means that business electricity is subject to the fluctuations of the markets, making it impossible for a company to estimate their energy costs for more than a few months at a time. So how is a company supposed to get cheaper business electricity?

The first of these is the advance purchase of electricity. It is possible in some arrangements for companies to purchase electricity now on the promise that it will be delivered later when they need it. This allows purchasers to lock in prices during low points. This may be impractical for some small companies, but it is an excellent way for companies who know they will be using large quantities of electricity during a specific season or during peak hours.

The second method is to negotiate a contract that keeps the price steady over a fixed period of time. These contracts ensure that the electricity suppliers receive a steady revenue stream throughout peak and non peak periods. They also allow companies to more carefully regulate how they spend and use their electricity budget, which can be very beneficial for planning ahead, and reducing overall billing and usage.

Lastly, businesses are already offered a discount rate when compared to domestic electricity users, and they may be able to increase that discount through negotiation. It is also possible for some businesses to receive tax breaks in order to help them pay for specific bills. Rebates and reduced cost programs are also offered to those businesses that make successful attempts to reduce their energy usage and conserve electricity.
