I remember the day my uncle got his Jeep. I was around 7 years old and I struggled to get my foot up to hoik myself into it. I fell face first into the car mat. My dad laughed at his brother for his extravagant purchase; he lives in the London suburbs.
When he took us for a spin I was in awe of the fact that we were that little bit taller than everyone else on the road. To a 7-year-old height is of extreme importance, every centimetre is measured in pencil on a wall at home.
My uncle still has his Jeep and I don't think my dad laughs anymore. Since getting a 4x4 my uncle has made so many trips to the country it's a wonder why he hasn't just moved there. He takes his dog for long rambling walks and frequently gets his jeep caked in mud from winding country roads.
Since then 2 of his dogs have sadly passed away, but those car mats that had my face pressed against them all those years ago have been replaced only once in 15 years. My uncle had completed his outdoorsy image with the addition of all weather tailored car mats. Made from rubber, these car mats withstood rain in Wales, snow in Scotland, numerous fishing trips and countless country hikes.
Good quality tailored car mats are a particularly prudent investment for those who lead an active lifestyle and for those who frequently travel with dogs. All weather, rubber car mats are best in these circumstances, but good quality carpet car mats are also relatively easy to clean. Carpet with a densely packed, twisted pile can often be brushed clean although you may have to be careful if they are likely to get wet often.
So here's a thank you to my uncle, for all those times he strapped mine and my cousins' bikes to the back of the car and drove us town dwellers out to get some country air. And here's to his car mats, which have seen our tiny wellingtons grow into big, ugly, adult ones.
