subject: Disadvantages Of Medical, health And Veterinary Clinic [print this page]

Walk-in clinics are a great alternative to clinics that require an appointment, but they can be somewhat limiting in their disadvantages. Because these clinics do not know that youre coming, usually none of the doctors will know you or your history beforehand, nor will they know any of the other patients. This can lead to some unpredictability in these walk-in clinics that regular clinics dont normally have, and can be somewhat troublesome because of that. Despite these troubles, walk-in clinics can be a great alternative to regular clinics, though these disadvantages should be kept in mind.

1. Unpredictable wait times

The problem with a walk-in clinic is that the number of clients ahead of you is wholly unpredictable. Sometimes a walk-in clinic will be nearly empty, while at other times it will be packed with patients. In particular, a walk-in clinic might be full in times of health panics, such as during flu shot crazes. Regular doctors appointments may also sometimes have some sort of wait, but clinics that require an appointment have specifically worked to space out the appointments as best as possible to avoid waits.

2. Less personalized care

The difference between a clinic that requires an appointment and a walk-in clinic can also be one of personalization. When making an appointment, it is possible to request a particular doctor or nurse, however with a walk-in clinic this is impossible. Multiple visits to a walk-in clinic will not guarantee a visit with someone who knows your past history or treatment. Furthermore, a walk-in clinic will often not have your records, and will rely on you to know your history.

3. Less specialized

Because walk-in clinics are not aware of what youre coming in for, they may not have the supplies ready to treat you if youve got a more unusual problem. A regular clinic may be able to order supplies for you, or refer you ahead of time to someone else, but if youve simply walked into a walk-in clinic, they may have to later refer you to a different clinic, instead of giving you notice beforehand. Furthermore, many walk-in clinics have been set up for a particular purpose and may only be equipped to handle things relating to that specialty. If you walk in to a flu shot clinic and you have a particular need or issue, the clinic may not be able to help you.
