subject: Stop Dwi Through Today's New Technology [print this page]

Driving under the influence is dangerous not just to the driver but also to anyone who gets in the way of the driver. It has indeed become an epidemic in many places where the amount of arrests and deaths from DWI's has risen. Because of this, there is a world wide search for products that will help lower the amount of times this problem is encountered.

Some carmakers such as Nissan are looking to deploy an anti-drunk device in new cars to prevent drunk driving. This new technology is designed to sense when a person has had too much to drink. The carmaker will set a threshold for the device in which it will determine that the person has had more than the allowed amount to get behind the wheel.

As the driver sits in the car, the odor from the alcohol will be monitored and will determine if the driver will be allowed to start the car. There are sensitive sensors in the passenger and driver seats that will detect the amount of alcohol that the person has drank.

There is also a camera device that could be mounted in the car, at the perfect position, to capture the face of the driver. The purpose of this is to measure the eyes of the driver and if the eyes become closed enough to signify that the driver is falling asleep, the seatbelt may be activated to tighten in order to alert the driver. Lexus offers something similar, which they call the anti-fatigue system.

Nissan also has a system that will gauge the sensitivity of how the car is being handled on the road. If there is a lot of moving in and out of lanes or if there is a lot of swaying, the seat belt may tighten. This will alert the driver and hopefully get him to pay better attention to the road.

Perspiration could also affect whether or not the car will be able to be driven. Very sensitive sensors on the shifting knob will be able to pick up whether the person could be driving under the influence. Most of the different technologies that are detected while the car is in motion will only display an alert to the driver.

For many years there was a new technology in which the person would have to take a breathalyzer before they started the car. If the car felt that the person had drunk too much alcohol or the blood alcohol level was way too high, then the car would not start. The car would completely be locked until the driver would be able to repeat the breathalyzer and prove that their alcohol on their breath is no longer there.

With so much technology today, it's amazing how it can assist us with the safety of our drivers and pedestrians. These advances will help cut down the amount of people who drive while under the influence of alcohol.
