subject: How To Improve Setting Goals For Yourself [print this page]

Everybody I know sets goals, however not many of them realize how to do it properly. What do I mean by that? Well, look at New Year's resolutions. Folks settle on their resolutions with so little determination to complete them that they're a joke when announced. However when carefully selected and effectively set, goals keep life moving in a positive direction you can measure.

Goals act like a guide, showing you where you began, where you stand now, and how far it still is to your desired destination. Every single piece of that is important information towards leading a purpose-filled life. Here are 3 questions that, when you answer them, will help you successfully set goals for yourself:

Question 1 - Am I making this my goal because I want it or because someone else wants me to do it? Before you decide on a goal, examine your reason for doing it. Is this something that you really want to achieve so much that you will pay the price for it? What Anthony Robbins says about achieving goals holds true: it's not a matter of can you do it; it's a matter of will you do it. And you can do it only if you want it enough to pay the goal's price; another individual's desire for it won't keep you motivated sufficiently to keep working.

What Anthony Robbins proclaims about reaching goals holds true: it isn't a matter of can you do it; it's a matter of will you do it. And you can do it only if you want it enough to pay the goal's cost; another individual's desire for it will not motivate you sufficiently to keep working. Decide to accomplish your own goals, not your spouse's goals for you, not your parents' goals for you, not your mentor's goals for you - you, and you alone, decide what you want to accomplish.

Question 2 - Should I consider my goal as a short-term, or a long-term, commitment? Your answer to this question is important since it taints your mindset, for better or worse, about your likelihood of achieving your goal.
