Contrary to what most people think, working in an office and on a computer can be exhausting and take its toll on your body. In my job, if I am not at my desk answering email or phone calls, then I am sitting in long meetings that can last more than 2 hours. At the end of the day my back is usually feeling cramped and tight and it takes a while to unwind and feel relaxed. I sometimes wonder if long term damage can be done this way.

One day, I finally had enough and consulted the ergonomic team at my company to do an assessment of my work space and habits. I was hopeful they would offer some solutions to my dilemma and save my back before I landed in a wheelchair. Well after about an hour of measuring my space and talking with me, all they ended up doing was raising my desk a bit and giving me a soft wrist pad for my mouse hand and then they went on their merry way.

It wasn't until a few weeks later at lunch I decide to take a tour around the office and see how my co-workers were set up. Most didn't have any special ergonomic features but one of our administrative assistants was using something as a chair that I had never seen before. It was a combination stability yoga ball with a rigid back like a regular office chair. When she returned from lunch I asked her about it. She said referred to it as a Giaim Balance Ball Chair and she said she typically uses it a few hours each day at work to train her posture.

Well I was intrigued about the idea so I borrowed it from her for a few days. It took a bit of getting used to but after a while I could feel my back muscles strengthening and I was becoming much more aware of my poor posture during the day which was no doubt contributing to my back problems. Now I use the chair regularly every day and my posture has improved immensley and I have fewer nights with back paint to deal with.
