Top 10 Radiology Specializations

Most radiology technicians are in the general radiology department, but there are also plenty of jobs for ultrasound technicians, diagnostic sonographers and nuclear medicine technologists. Many people automatically think of gynecologic ultrasonography when they think of a specialization in any of these fields, but you can choose from many other ultrasound/nuclear specializations as well. Ultrasound technicians may choose diagnostic sonography specializations such as Doppler sonography, echocardiography, gynecologic ultrasound, musculoskeletal sonography, obstetric sonography or vascular interventional sonography. Nuclear medicine technologists can choose such specializations as nuclear pharmacist, PET/CT or radiation therapy.

There are clearly many specializations to choose from in the radiology field, and they aren't limited to specializations for radiology technicians. There are numerous ultrasound and nuclear medicine specializations as well. It is a good idea to get your general radiology certification and get some experience through entry-level jobs or through internship programs; then decide which specializations suit you. The more specialized certifications you have, the more job and career opportunities will be open to you. And regardless of what career you are in that is a good thing.
