The city of Hong Kong is now one of the worlds most prosperous economies, a focus of international trade and commerce. It is also a magnet for foreign visitors, drawn by the citys unique culture and shopping opportunities. Its picturesque natural harbour and spectacular skyline are two of Hong Kongs most celebrated features. Colonial influences mingle with ultra-modern developments, making Hong Kong a fascinating destination for any traveler. The visitor will be enchanted by the traditional festivals including the Chinese New Year, Ching Ming Festival which honours ancestors, and the Spring Lantern Festival, when the visitor can see a multitude of lovely lanterns.

The Sam Tung Uk Museum located in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong is a walled village that has been transformed into a museum. The original construction was done by a Chinese clan, the Chan, who created the compound under the direction of the patriarch of the clan Chan Yam-shing. This was done in 1786 at the time of the Emperor Qianlong.

In the early 80s the two century old village compound was vacated and its restoration and subsequent conversion into a museum was undertaken by the government.

The highly methodical layout of the village is similar to a chessboard with an assembly hall, entrance hall and an ancestral hall with four separate houses in the centre. Also featured are an orientation room, a reception area and a lecture theatre. The village is totally surrounded and enclosed by lines of houses at the back and sides.

The items on permanent display include the buildings of the compound and the everyday objects and agricultural implements of the Hakka people. The Way We Were a special exhibition has been created for guests to get a taste of authentic village life. Additionally temporary exhibitions with relevance to the theme of the museum are also held from time to time.
