subject: Your Bedroom Is Your Retreat [print this page]

The bedroom is a place just for youThe bedroom is a place just for you. It is not meant for guests or for entertaining. The bedroom is not where you go to work or play; it is where you go to retreat from the stresses of the day. This is a room that should be welcoming from the moment you enter the door. Making this space one that treats you to indulgences of sight, sound and smell is quite easy.

The first key to a restful bedroom is your bed. Many people will splurge on bedding that looks and feels wonderful; but forget about what they are actually sleeping on. Your mattress, however, dictates how you sleep and how you feel when you wake up in the morning. Because of its importance, you will at some point in time get a new mattress for your room. When you do, you may want to consider a natural mattress as your new sleeping surface.

A natural mattress is one that is environmentally friendly, but also extremely comfortable. Because the make-up of a natural mattress is oftentimes quite different than a traditional mattress, you will be surprised and pleased at the comfort level you receive. Memory foam is one type of natural mattress that has been a big seller for the past several years.

Latex mattresses are also highly popular at this time. Organic in nature, latex mattresses are actually made from material of the rubber tree. While upon first bringing home this type of mattress there is a unique smell; latex mattresses lose the unique scent after just a few days or weeks and leave you with a bed that doesn't lose its form. That means that for many years, you will be cradled in comfort night after night.

Remembering that your bedroom is a place of relaxation that should speak to your senses, you can create a unique sleeping area of fabrics and colors that bring you peace and calm your spirit. Think of the room as your retreat and you will get from it what you need to rejuvenate for the next day.

Besides the bed, you could add a cozy chair or two into the space if you would like to be able to go there for times of reading or reflection. Chairs in the bedroom should be compact but comfortable. Micro-suede fabric makes a good choice for chairs and also for bedding, as it is soft and easy on the eyes.

To soften the lines of the room, you can use throw blankets on the bed and also on chairs if you have them. The colors of throws should compliment the other colors in the room, and should also be soft to the touch.

Scent is easy to add to any room of the house; but in the bedroom you want to make sure to choose a scent that is not too strong. The room needs to be welcoming, and an overpowering scent will throw off your senses. Vanilla is a popular scent for the bedroom, but if you visit a bath and body shop instead of a big box store, you will find a wider selection of scents that are perfect for the bedroom.
