subject: Which Is Better: Wet Or Dry Liposuction? [print this page]

Not all liposuction methods are made equalNot all liposuction methods are made equal. It is best to compare and contrast different types. There are common methods of liposuction that have different side effects and risks. Making an informed decision about which type you would prefer is crucial to the overall success of the procedure. Check with your physician to see which type of surgery could be best for you.

The first version of liposuction to come out in the late seventies and early eighties was what is now called "dry" liposuction. This type is not used very often now as it has been supplanted by supposedly better and more technologically advanced methods. Dry liposuction has been shown to be more painful and a bit riskier than other methods that have recently come to light. Although not very many doctors practice this method, it is good to be aware of it.

Most doctors use what is called "wet" liposuction. This type of procedure is more recent than the other method and was developed in the 1980s. During this surgery, fluid is injected and used as a local anesthetic on the area where the procedure is being performed. This liquid mixture of lidocaine, saline, and epinephrine helps the blood vessels in that particular area of your body to constrict and thereby prevents too much blood from being lost during surgery. With this method of surgery, pockets of fat become easier to break up and remove safely.

Of the two methods, it has been agreed by most surgeons that "wet" is the safer of the two. Not only does this method prevent the loss of too much blood but local anesthetic helps reduce pain after the surgery has been performed. This method also has been shown by various experts to be the less risky of the two. With less loss of blood during surgery and less possibility of complication, there are fewer risks associated with the "wet" type of surgery.

That being said, surgeries all have risks and possibilities of complications. The lowered risks of this method do not mean there are no risks at all. Always consult with your doctor before making any major decision in the type of surgery that could be best for you. Given several points "wet" liposuction is probably best, especially if you are removing a large volume of fat.

Always consult with your doctor. He/she will be able to give you more details and answer any questions you have regarding these two different types of liposuction and which would be better for you. Never be afraid to ask questions; your health is a number one priority!
