subject: The Many Benefits Of Routine Basketball Practice [print this page]

All successful basketball teams have one thing in common. They all go through a regular regimen of basketball practice. The more successful a team, the more often they have practiced. When discussing this topic it is always important to examine the importance of the drills and a strict regular schedule. It should also be made aware how vital it is to recognize the tough nature of this sport while discussing offense and defense practice routines.

What should a practice session consist of? This answer is all too simple. It should always consist of practice drills. The regimen should be designed completely around these drills. These drills need to be repeated many times as a coach stands around to supervise them. After players learn to not only practice, but master their drill, they often improve in both areas of the game, offense and defense.

The schedule for these practice routines should be a very strict one. A coach should be the one responsible for letting his team know how important it is to never miss practice. Much like other hobbies and sports, the ability to play great basketball can only be achieved through regular practice. Most winning teams have a very good understanding of this very concept.

It is so very important to always keep in mind how strenuous basketball practice can be. Basketball by it's very nature is a very strenuous type of sport. It is one of the few sports that has a player constantly running around and jumping. Not to mention the fact that a player is typically catching and throwing while doing these things. There is a lot going on at once within this sport. A coach must always remind the players to stay properly hydrated.

Basketball dribbling drills, while sometimes over looked, are a very important part of any basketball practice routine. The ability a player has to dribble in an effective way is the basis behind the offensive side of this game. Many teams have been destroyed by very poor dribbling. Even if the team has perfected the art of very accurate shooting skills they could suffer greatly from poor dribbling. Four or sometimes more drills are used to practice this skill.

While discussing the offense aspect of the game, let us remember how vital passing skills are. If a team dribbles well and also shoots well their offense could still suffer. This could be caused through a lack of proper passing skills. Passing is a very important part of offense within this game. Typically at least two or more types of drills are run to perfect this process.

Some teams that play a really great offense forget the importance of a solid defense. Basketball is the type of game where ball possession switches very quickly from one team to another. This is the main reason why a strong defense is a must have. A team needs to put just as much practice time into their defense as they would when practicing for their offense.
