One nice feature is the folding Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray, which when closed gives a continuous, smooth, curve to the machines top cover. The front panel has a 63mm colour LCD screen and control buttons that are flush with the fascia. These buttons let you navigate menus to complete your operations. A number pad is also included together with a button to let you choose which function you want to use and another button to stop and start operations.

Most memory card types are catered for with two slots at the front left of the Epson Stylus SX600FW, together with a PictBridge socket for digital cameras, which will also take a standard flash drive. There are sockets at the back for USB, cabled network, phone line and a phone handset.

A variety of drivers are included allowing you to all the usual things as well as fit web-pages to paper width for printing, Optical Character Recognition, and the ability to assign applications to various buttons.

The Epson Stylus SX600FW will let you carry out a number of functions when not connected to a computer such as document copying and printing from memory cards. More unusually, you can print lined and squared paper as well as use an image from a memory card as a watermark on printed paper. Admittedly this is not the cheapest way to produce your own writing paper.

The Epson Stylus SX600FW printed black and white pages at a rate of 14 pages per minute (ppm) while colour ones took six ppm, not the 38ppm quoted by Epson. These results were more than acceptable for a sub 100 all-in-one printer. Photo prints took about one minute 20 seconds which was also perfectly acceptable.

Prints from the SX600FW were mixed. Photographs were fine. Colours were good and the images were well defined. On the other hand black and white text on normal paper was below par with a lack definition and some jagged edges. Colour graphics were OK although there was a hint of banding sometimes while photocopies were a little pale.

Although there are two sets of inkjet cartridges available for the Epson Stylus SX600FW the ones to get are the higher yield T070140, T071240, T071340 and T071440 ones which offer better value. Better still, there are compatible cartridges available which are even cheaper.

You can send mono and colour faxes with the SX600FW at up to 33.6kbps, store 60 names in its memory, send a single page fax in about three seconds and the memory will store as many as 180 pages received.

The Epson Stylus SX600FW if good value for money at under 100. You get a wide variety of functions and for the price it makes a good job of all of them
