The River Pearl deposits itself on the Western side of the open waters of Hong Kong. This has resulted in the water of that area having a low salinity level. Taking advantage of this, Hong Kong developed this area into what is now known as the Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau Marine Park. It was made a protected area on the 22nd of November 1996.
Spread out over an area of 1200 hectares of sea space, yellow buoys mark the boundary of the park. With its ample nutrient reserves, the Park is rich in fishing resources.
It provides a home to the rare White Chinese Dolphin. During the summer, dolphin numbers are thought to reach 145 and in the spring 88. The dolphin calves start out with a dark grey colour which lightens with age. Whilst the adult males retain a few dark spots, the females are an unusual pink colour.
Apart from dolphins, the Park plays host to croakers, Shortnose Pony Fish, Stripped Eel Catfish and Bartail Flatheads amongst others.
