subject: Achieving Fitness Through Setting Goals. [print this page]

If you have decided or been advised for whatever reason to get fit or take on an exercise program your efforts could be futile without a direction or an easy to follow set of goals or targets.

As with any premeditated change no matter what avenue it's in whether its business or fitness basic goals are paramount they will become the milestones in which you will use to measure your achievements and monitor progress and development thus allowing alterations as required.

So the first step in forming goals is to establish where you are at present and where you want to be at the conclusion of the journey, and the method in which you intend to achieve your goals.

We can break the goals down to short medium and long term:

For example the task we have set ourselves is to run a marathon within a year,

Therefore we would establish a training plan that forms its structure around our goal, it would be pointless concentrating all our efforts on weight lifting when to achieve our goal we need to run 26 miles.

So to formulate our long term goal we would break this down into manageable elements which would include short term objectives that ideally include diet and an introduction to fitness.

And as we progress additional elements would likely include weight management and our dietary intake, once youre comfortable in this arena the stakes are raised all the time striving to the end goal of running a marathon within a year.

Goals help in keeping motivation at a peak which works in tandem with progress,

As you can see with a direction the task of monitoring your achievements becomes easier and you can address the areas that show short falls.

The above is just an example of recording records and achievements apply this to anything and the results will amaze you and if you happen to digress you will be aware of where and when.
