The Diamond DA42 has first been commercialized in 2004. It was equipped with Thielert 1.7 engines which have turned out to give its owners many headaches. Finally, the faulty engines, gear boxes, a few related crashes and the poor response of the Thielert and DAI management (from the customer view) lead to widespread disappointment also about the otherwise well-designed and nearly flawless aircraft.
Diamond aircraft industries with its charismatic leader Christian Dries was still convinced that a Diesel engine was needed in aviation and as no alternatives to Thielert existed and their negotiations to purchase the bankrupt Thielert company, they founded their own engine company together with important and well known partners with an engineering background.
While Thielert was brought back onto its feet, renamed to Centurion and they brought the new 2.0 engine into the markets. After the experience made with the 1.7 engine it now seems that their 2.0 is running fine in both models, the DA40 and DA42.
