The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is a step up in the smart phone business. Rim introduced the company's first touchscreen and physical-keyboard with the brand-new BlackBerry 6 operating system. The price is $200 with a two-year contract from AT&T.

The design of the Torch is a little thicker than some of the other top of the line smart phones. The Torch weighs a light 5.86 ounces and measures 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches. Rim has successfully retained the look and feel of the BlackBerry phone, while adding a touchscreen. The front of this version of the BlackBerry has the four regular buttons: Menu, Talk, Power/End and Back. The buttons are on the side of the optical touch pad, which may be used for navigation. In addition, the touchscreen may be used to navigate.

The Torch has a vertical slide-out keyboard. The slider is sturdy, and the keyboard slides in and out easily and effortlessly. The Torch's keyboard is slightly thinner than the other models of BlackBerry models, but is still comfortable for users to type. The keys are nicely sized and have many useful shortcut buttons. The Torch also has a portrait and landscape mode that can be used with the software keyboard.

RIM has finally brought us a smart phone that is on par with the rest or the smart phone world when it comes to megapixel count. The Torch has a five-megapixel camera with 2x zoom, LED flash, and auto focus. The smart phone also has new shooting features, such as face detection and scene modes. The interface is easy to use and presents itself remarkably well.

The picture quality is much better than what you will get from the older BlackBerry models cameras. Capturing terrific shots are easy and fun to do, when playing around with the scene mode. The camera, unfortunately, only shoots in VGA video and has no high-definition capability.

The web kit based browser may be one of the most exciting update features in the 6 operating system. The BlackBerry platform has always had problems by having an inferior web browser. The new browser is a vast improvement over the older BlackBerry operating system browser. You now get tabbed browsing, auto wrap text zoom, and pinch to zoom multi-touch support.

RIM surpasses themselves with Email feature, and with the support of the BlackBerry 6 operating system shows that the company is the leader of messaging. With the BlackBerry Internet service, you may have up to 10 business or personal IMAP4 or POP3 email accounts. You can sync with your company's BlackBerry Server with support for Lotus Domino, Exchange, or Groupwise for instant email delivery.

The Torch successfully melds the BlackBerry keyboard with a touchscreen, resulting in a style that is familiar to BlackBerry users and truly innovative. If you are a BlackBerry lover, you will be truly happy with the Torch. The Torch's performance specifications, unfortunately, are not on par with other competing smartphones such as the Samsung Vibrant or the HTC Droid Incredible. Though the Blackberry Torch is a significant improvement over the later models, the opposing Android may have much more appeal.
