subject: Fixing disk Read Error Has Occurred Error Message [print this page]

Dual-boot configuration allows a user to use the features of two operating systems on a single computer. While creating a dual-boot system is an easy task, it may result in a boot error message which further leads to inaccessibility of data saved in a hard drive partition. Such situations mainly occur when the user installs an earlier version of Windows operating system (eg. Windows XP) on a Windows 7 or Vista-based system. To access the data in such situations, a Windows user needs to restore the data from an updated backup. But, if the user has not maintained any backup, then s/he needs to use a disk recovery application to perform complete recovery of data.

Consider the below mentioned cases to illustrate the above problem:

You have a Windows Vista-based system, and you install Windows XP on the same system. In this case, only Windows XP will start.

You have a dual-boot system (with Windows Vista and XP), and you install an additional instance of Windows XP. In this case, when you try to start Windows Vista, you might encounter the below error message:

Disk read error has occurred

Cause:

The root cause for unbootable Windows Vista partition in both cases is incompatibility of the earlier versions of Windows operating systems with Windows Vista.

Resolution:

To resolve the above problem and to access data saved in the Windows Vista based hard drive partition, you will need to:

Type the underneath command to restore the Windows Vista boot code and MBR (Master Boot Record) using Bootsect.exe:

Drive:ootBootsect.exe /NT60 All

Create an entry manually for Windows XP operating system in the BCD (Boot Configuration Database) Boot.ini using Bcdedit.exe.

In most cases, the problem gets resolved by using any of the above methods. If the problem persists and you are not able to access the data saved in Windows Vista based partition, then you need to opt for an effective disk recovery application. Such Hard Disk Recovery scan the hard drive using effective recovery algorithms and recover all the files.
