The last time these two teams met in a tournament final, Sachin Tendulkar produced a match-winning century that saw India win with relative ease. Not many people remember though, that there were other vital contributions too - Yuvraj and Dhoni both scored fifties, while Harbhajan Singh picked up 5/56. For Sri Lanka, Dilshan started off the chase by smashing 42 off 29 balls, while Sri Lanka's highest score was made by Kandamby who made 66. Of the protagonists above, only Tendulkar will be absent in this final, while Dilshan has taken his game to the next level from where he was then. The scenario is also a little different now. In September '09, victory in the finals gave India a brief reign as the top ODI team. Now, India enter the finals as the top Test team.

After a sluggish start to the tournament, the Indian team looks to have gathered some momentum heading into the finals, while the opposite is true for Sri Lanka, who suffered a chastening defeat against India in their last league match when captain Kumar Sangakkara's decision to bat first and get his bowlers used to the dew back-fired.

Sri Lanka will rely heavily on Dilshan and Sangakkara to come good. Though Mahela Jayawardene is a classy batsman, his ODI stats - an average 32.20 over 316 matches at a strike rate of 77 - are hardly inspiring. Jayawardene is capable of taking the game away from the opposition on his day, but his day seems to come far more often in Test matches than in ODIs. Samaraweera is not yet consistent enough and Kandamby hasn't had a fifty-plus score in an ODI since September 2009. Tharanga has shaped up well, but he is not yet the finished article - hence the reliance on Dilshan and Sangakkara to come good. Sri Lanka might make a change in their lineup bringing in the rested Welegedera in place of the off-colour Thushara. Their unsung hero has been Suraj Randiv who has played all four league matches and given away runs at just 4.05 runs per over, while also being among the wickets in a largely batting-friendly tournament. Sangakkara will rely on him to control the flow of runs in the middle overs, but his job will be made easier if the new ball bowlers can pick up a few early wickets.
