subject: Operation Rajiv [print this page] * On the April 19, 1987 , the enemy established quad post on the left shoulder dominating the Sonam post.
* The establishment of the post by the enemy went unobserved due to poor visibility.
* A patrol under 2nd Lt. Rajiv Pandey was launched on May 29.
* After crossing a snow hump ahead of a saddle, the patrol found itself immediately below the left shoulder & were under fire.
* Having no time to react, the officers & his brave soldiers died charging the enemy within 25 mts of the final objective.
* Based on the information revealed during the May 29 operation, a detailed plan was evolved & an assault was launched on the night of June 25 by 8 JAK L1.
* The assault section reached near the top & cleared the two trenches but pulled back as the weapons & communication equipment jammed due to cold weather.
* To overcome the problems of extreme low night temperature, the assault was launched during the day on June 26,1987.
* The attack was observed artillery, direct fare of machine gun & rocket launchers.
* NB SUB Bana Singh led his assasult section to reach the top at 1500 hrs.
* Atleast 10 enemies were killed .
* The left shoulder action at 21000 feet, in subzero temperature, with near vertical approach against a determined enemy is a classic subunit level action in the annals of military history.
* The post was renamed as BANA and NB SUB Bana Singh was awarded a Paramvir Chakra for his gallantry.
