subject: Cars That Will Vanish By 2015-16 [print this page] India moved to Euro IV or Bharat IV emission norms quicker than the rest of the world but this shift caused a lot of car makers to phase out some of their models from the country. Right now the BS-IV emission standards are applicable in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Surat, Agra etc. The rest of the country has upgraded to Euro III or Bharat III emission norms.
Among the various models being phased out, the Maruti 800 is the most iconic one. Earlier it was being speculated that Maruti might upgrade Maruti 800 to meet the BS-IV norms but later Maruti announced that it wont and so Maruti 800 and Maruti Omni would be phasing out from the cities that have to adhere to BS-IV norms. But Maruti 800 would be available in BSIII compliant cities for now. The other Maruti models have been upgraded and fitted with Maruti's new K-series engine. Following Marutis footsteps Fiat has also decided to phase out its Palio, which was already doing badly in the Indian market. The gap created by Fiat Palio would be filled by Fiat Grande Punto, which is Fiats new premium hatchback in the country.
Similarly, Ford Ikon (1.3 petrol), Skoda Octavia (1.9 TDI engine) and Chevrolet Tavera (2.5DI) too have phased out of the BS-IV cities and would only be sold in the BSIII cities. This is not all as many more cars are slated to leave India by 2015-16 when the whole nation upgrades to the Bharat Stage IV standards.
