subject: Toner Cartridge Changing Tips [print this page]

When it is time to change the toner cartridge on the computer, the computer will tell you by flashing a message on the LED display or beeping, depending on the model. Changing the black and white cartridges is easier than changing the color ones, but both are fairly simple for those who read and follow directions on the new packaging.

Model

First, it is good to know the model of the printer. Most of the time, it will be written on the back of the printer. Look for two different names here. The first name should be the name for the printer the second name will be the brand model. Once you have this information, you are ready to order new cartridges either through a retailer or online.

Type

At the store or website, they will be able to tell which toner cartridge is needed to replace the old one. Specific printer models differ in the size and shape of parts they use, so it is important to purchase the correct one. Otherwise, they will not fit and/or function. As a consumer, one thing to keep in mind is that cartridges are sensitive to light. If it is going to be a while before the change is made to the printer, it will be best to cover it up to protect it from the sunlight. For example, do not leave it by a window or glass door.

Price

When purchasing a toner cartridge, another choice is to buy a compatible one. Some people are unaware they exist. Customers think by using the compatible toner cartridge their warranty on the printer will be void, but in fact, that is false. When a consumer purchases the original OEM cartridge, they are spending twice as much money than they should pay. While both types work, it is up to the customer to determine which type to use. Hundreds of dollars a year can be saved by using the compatible ones. Compatible cartridges are guaranteed to work. Some people, however, prefer to stick with name brands, regardless of the savings in money, for personal reasons or due to company policy. One thing to keep in mind is that companies may sell compatible, remanufactured and name brand toner cartridges.

Speed

Depending on how and where the toner is purchased, it may take some time to receive the ordered item or items. This is sometimes crucial, especially if the printer is out of toner and there is work to be done or something important to print out that cannot be produced. There are companies online that can ship out cartridges the same day they are ordered at no additional cost.
