subject: What Is On The Police Exam? [print this page] This is a question that many people wonder when they're thinking of becoming a police officer. Obviously you're not going to walk into a local police station, hand them a resume and get a job after a background check. The exam is really a way to evaluate key aspects of your aptitude. There are very specific skills that you must possess when getting into law enforcement and I'm not talking about being able to shoot a gun. You need to be able to think on your feet, follow directions and possess logical strength. And these are the things they try to figure out in the police exam.
You can sum up what you're going to be tested on in the following categories: logic, directionality, writing, following directions, memorization and what you would do in specific situations. All of those categories are pretty vague, but they're vague because you could get any type of question in them. Logic is a very mathematic oriented section that is typically all maths. But there are sometimes word problems and even looking at shapes. It's hard to prepare for. Writing is something you need to possess because what you write eventually will be used in a court room.
The need for the police exam to check for directionality should be obvious. Memorization is really more of giving you a picture and then asking you questions about it later. The last type of questions are situational and I'd love to advise you on them, but I wouldn't really know what they would ask. They're trying to see if you have a good head on your shoulders. Just answer them honestly and if you're a good person you'll get them right.
