Trifecta Systems - Can They Help You Find Key Dogs?

Trifecta systems for dog racing all claim to help you hit more trifectas, but do they? Perhaps the best way to compare one to another is to look at the way they pick contenders. Do they pick the top three dogs for speed and/or class and tell you to box them? Do they use some weird formula based on an algorithm, whatever the heck that is? Not that I have anything against algorithms. It's just that I think that there's a better way to predict who's going to cross the finish line first, second and third.

I like old-fashioned handicapping with a new twist. Rather than depending on just one approach, I like a trifecta system that uses 2 key dogs to give you contenders that you can key or wheel and that have a high probability of hitting the board. Why settle for just one approach when two can help you find that extra dog that so often you leave out of your wager? I know I've done it so many times and kicked myself for it afterward.

However, it's really hard to determine which one dog to put on top in tri bets, and it's just too expensive for most of us to box four dogs. But then, if we pick just one dog to key on, that second dog dog comes in with our other dogs and we lose even if we have the other two dogs. This isn't the way to make money at the dog track.

The only kind of tri handicapping system that works consistently is the one that can help you find the dogs that other bettors overlook. These are the dogs that aren't so obviously top dogs. With a little digging, and a good system, the smart handicapper can consistently find these dogs on the program. What's more, a good trifecta system can keep you from playing races where there are no dogs that fit the criteria of what a key dog should be.

If you're going to bet trifectas - and the payoffs make them an attractive bet - you should definitely have a system, not just bet on impulse or on what the crowd picks. While the crowd's favorite often comes in, it doesn't come in often enough or pay enough to make you a profit if you just blindly bet it every race. This is why finding two key dogs is so important. You need to back up your top pick if you want to hit more trifectas and make more money.
