Can Red Wine Make You Fat?
Can Red Wine Make You Fat?

It is often described as part of the French paradox, how French people tend to be thin even though their diet is relatively rich in fat. On the other hand, wine is an alcoholic drink and alcohol is thought of as detrimental to weight loss. It's not called a beer belly for nothing.

So, what is the truth? Is red wine a superfood or is it a quick way to a bigger waistline?

There's little doubt as to the many health benefits of red wine. It is full of antioxidants which help your body fight free radicals, protect the body from inflammation, and are attributed many other helpful qualities. Red wine is also connected to a reduced risk of various heart disease. In fact, it is likely the only alcoholic drink that receives such accolades.

In addition, an intriguing study which was published earlier this year actually found that, among the study group, those who drank a moderate amount of red wine on a regular basis tended to be slimmer than the rest of the study group. This finding was surprising and even the researchers weren't convinced that red wine may actually help you get thinner. There is certainly no known explanation of why this may be the case. One theory connected with the study talked about how the body may be able to better deal with low quantities of red wine if it's drunk on a regular basis but no real explanation was found or agreed upon.

However, only moderate drinkers enjoyed this strange phenomenon. Heavy drinkers tended to become heavier as well.

Before you go and buy a bottle of wine to gulp from daily, realize that this is just one study and it's still unclear whether the people who were slimmer also lead a healthier life in general than the others in the group. Also remember that drinking alcohol does mean that you're consuming extra calories and these do matter when it comes to weight loss and/or gain.

You should also consider that alcohol calories delay the burning of other calories so you shouldn't feel liberty to drink all the red wine you want. However, if you do drink alcohol, this is likely the best option you have. Just make sure to not overdo it. Moderation is key to this as it is with any kind of calorie consumption.
