The FWA site is truly global, reaching 181 of the 193 countries in the world. It is no wonder then, that the achievement of an FWA award is considered a pinnacle of any web design career. It is an unfunded project, which employes many volunteers and enlists the support of various sponsors.
By searching the internet, and analysing candidate sites, the judges select a Site of the Day (SOTD), the winners of which are then entered into the Site of the Month (SOTM) category. From the 12 SOTM winners will come the SOTY (Site of the Year).
The FWA use a well established set of criteria in their judging process, selecting the most Innovative and accomplished websites to showcase to the public. Amongst other traits, cutting edge technology and influential ideas are highly prized.
This is not just an awards body however. The FWA has established itself as an industry hub for millions of visitors looking for inspirational ideas and the latest web design developments, from flash technology to SEO web design. It offers visitors downloadable wallpapers, an archive section dating back to the site's inception in 2000, and a variety of interviews and articles detailing up to date industry news.
All in all, this site is a celebration of the most recent and most adept examples of web design. It provides both a starting point for the creative process, as well as an end result for web designers to aspire towards.
FWA is currently developing it smobile showcase programme, in which mobiles sites will be honoured in the same way as the SOTD, SOTM, and SOTY. The award is open to anyone who has created a mobile site, mobile browser game, iPhone app, or any other content specifically for mobile phones.
