The Self-Help Guru Yardstick
The Self-Help Guru Yardstick

These are my quick and dirty criteria:

1. Does the self-help guru have a rabid following? (Hint: Answer should be "yes"). Then why? What do they offer that's pertinent to your life?

For instance, I really like the old timers, like Dale Carnegie, Og Mandino, and Napolean Hill. Their works have stood the test of decades - they were actually pioneers in the self-help field, and they came from an age of accountability... which leads me to my next point...

2. It's a waste of time to listen to a self-help leader who does not teach you to be consistently accountable to yourself and others. Period. If we are searching to become self-directed with consistent internal growth, we need to be accountable.

3. Determine that not everyone who claims to be a self help expert is one. Be wise in who you follow.

4. Don't believe everything you read. Now, I'm not saying to throw the baby out with the bathwater here. Rather, my point is to take what applies to you from whomever you're affiliating with and run with it - but stay true to your inner soul's purpose. As time goes on, you'll reap the benefits of your studies by a deep maturity you'll gain.

5. Final five here. And this one is my personal encouragement to you: Believe that every experience in your life gives you the choice to become a better person....or not. With an open mindset, choose the former.

Do you have a list of self-help books to get you started? You should! This is a field of discovery that only you can master. God speed to you on your journey... Discover more tips at http://lizharmon.com
