subject: Roller Shades Are A Great Choice For Anybody [print this page]

The windows in our homes aren't necessarily something we think about, but they make an impact on the aesthetic of an apartment and can make the difference between renting and buying a home or apartment, or passing. Using windows in a decorating scheme is important to the overall feel within your home.

Many window blinds styles are available and they all come with their own questions. Vertical blinds are the go to for a lot of apartment dwellers, but they can be extremely difficult to clean, requiring a person to take down the blinds and soak them in the tub when regular dusting isn't cutting it anymore. Bamboo shades are a nice alternative and are much easier to clean but with their material it begs the question of whether or not they would fit the overall scheme of your home. Fabric curtains are popular and can be quite costly and are also known to trap any and all dirt and hair requiring some elbow grease maintenance.

You could have no window shades, but unless you live in a high rise with no neighbors and you don't mind having all your artwork and furniture fade from sunlight, that's not a good options for anyone. We like to look out our windows, but also have the option of shutting the rest of the world out when we want to. Roller shades are an attractive window treatment for any home and provide superior light blocking technology while also being exceedingly easy to clean and are kid friendly.

Blacking out most light can be a boon to those of you who work a swing or graveyard shift and have alternative sleep schedules. This is not to say that all roller shades block all light all the time. There are a variety of coverings that filter light differently, as well as a green alternative in mesh solar shades. Roller shades can also be used with other window shades.

Stylish, simple, and with a lot of elegance, roller shades can be made into anything you want them to be. There are a plethora of textures, fabrics, and colors that make these treatments as customizable as fabric curtains, but without the increase in price. Also, these particular shades can work manually or by remote control - it's up to you! Many older homes and apartments can come with non standard windows, which make treating them a harder proposition. Making your own rollers, without sewing is a fun and simple project.

The project begins by measuring the overall width of your window and cutting a cardboard tube approximately one half inch shorter, while for the height of the window eight inches of additional fabric is added.

Attaching fabric to your tubes doesn't require you to sew, but you must make even hems. This can be done by just folding the fabric over onto an adhesive and setting the adhesive with an iron. Attaching your now hemmed fabric to your tubes is done by hot gluing the fabric onto the tube and then rolling it until the tube is covered. This is done to the top and bottom of your shade and the final touch is done when you've attached a rope or ribbon to your curtain to allow you to roll it up or down.

Making a shade can be fun for the children in your life and will allow them to express their creativity and design perspective in an inexpensive way. For the bulk of your windows, buying roller shades is inexpensive and customizable.
