Essential Outdoor Clothing for Walking in the UK

If you're a nature lover and want to get out and enjoy the UK country side, make sure you have the right clothing and equipment with you. The following items are essential, regardless of the season.

The right footwear can make the difference between a successful walk, and a disastrous uncomfortable outing. You will need to wear boots that have a good, deep tread sole the stiffer the better. The boots should provide sturdy ankle support and be waterproof. Good boots will have sufficient cushioning on the soles. Walking boots are made more comfortable by wearing good walking socks. You should look for extra padding around the toes and heels and minimal seams to prevent irritation. A good quality sock will be made from material that wicks the sweat outwards.

A waterproof jacket and trousers are needed in all seasons as being caught in an unpredicted downpour can create discomfort or could lead to health risks. One key element of a jacket is a hood or a provision for a hood to be attached. You will also want to have plenty of pockets for necessary walking items such as maps, snacks, sunglasses and other important things. Again, breathable material is beneficial as it is not always cold when it rains. For the more serious walker who intends to hit the tracks in all weather types; storm flaps that prevent water getting in through the zips, reinforced hoods, ventilation features and adjustable cuffs are added features that a good, higher end jacket will provide. Synthetic walking trousers are lightweight, quick-to-dry and loose fitting so are ideal for walkers.

Warm clothing, required more for the cooler months, are a must. At times, a walker will get very hot and sweaty due to the extent of energy being exerted, but do not be fooled; as soon as the intensity level drops, so will the body temperature, combined with sweat this can make for an unpleasant experience and can also lead to health concerns. Make sure that you take warm clothing with you, or have it on you so that you are prepared for all weather conditions. A hat, gloves and spare clothing should be included and also wearing layers of clothes. Thermals are a necessity for winter months and for those hiking to higher altitudes. Layering clothing with thin layers is the most useful method so that layers can be removed and added when needed.

Other equipment needed is a good quality rucksack, water canisters or bottles, a first aid kit and a compass or navigational equipment. If you are interested in tracking your progress, a pedometer will measure your steps and can be very motivational.
