Congestion causes a massive problem for drivers in the UK, and it seems that the new government have an idea as to why this happens. Broken down lights cause massive problems to road users, especially in rush hour, yet we still manage to get through them and into the office. It begs the question; do we actually need these lights in the first place? The new government feel that the country need s to be kicked into touch by removing the lights and freeing up the traffic to move along at its own pace, without any added problems. Theresa Villers was quotes as saying "There is a very real suspicion that thousands of traffic lights across the country are creating rather than cutting congestion." There has been no research to back this up, and some worry that switching off a great deal of the fourteen thousand lights across the UK may impact more on road safety than it would on congestion. There is a big difference between the short term remedy of removing the lights, and whether it will impact on the long time safety of both road users and pedestrians on the roads. The idea of removing the lights will be particularly worrying for the blind and elderly, as this will make it far more dangerous for them when out and about. Boris Johnson has suggested an alternative crossing system, but if the current government get their way, this may not even be implemented in favour of removing the crossings all together.
Another option suggested is to re phase the light system, giving more time for busier roads rather than an even lighting system.
