Race bred is the only way to describe Honda's flagship CBR1000RR. Honda claim that this year's model handles like a 600, and that's a valid claim. The 1000 is a mere 1 inches longer in the wheel base and boasts the exact same seat height. The rake, tank capacity and curb weight are almost identical to it's little brother, the CBR600RR. James Toseland won the 2007 World Superbike championship on the Fireblade and lessons learned from the championship mean Honda have created an all-new CBR1000RR for 2008 - based on those lessons. Bike magazine said: "Riding liter sportsbikes fast used to be the preserve of those possessing talent or powerful good luck. Honda's extraordinary achievement is to open this high-performance world to all but the most resolutely inept. The blade is ridiculously, brilliantly fast but at the same time reassuringly controlled. Brilliant it is."

The early Fireblades were a major handful a quick look around any breakers yard will tell you how difficult they were to handle, but Honda have persevered and the 2008 Fireblade promises to be as easy to handle as it is fast.Toseland has secured a place in Yamaha's 2008 MotoGP squad thanks to a combination of riding skill and the Honda CBR1000RR's amazing handling and speed.

The all new, 2008 Honda CBR1000RR is ready to take on all comers - Wet weight is 199 kilos, power output is 178bhp at 12,000rpm. the fairing is all new, as is the MotoGP-inspired rear end and the stubby exhaust system, meaning a completely different look and feel from 2007's model. The wheels are new, the chassis and swingarm have been redesigned, turn-signals at the front have been integrated into the rear-view mirrors, and the air-intakes ducts have been reworked and repositioned. The 2008 Fireblade also gets a slipper clutch and a new, sophisticated steering damper. Even the battery is lighter and more compact, easing the job of the new monoblock radial-mounted front disc brake calipers and six-point mount floating rotors. The suspension has had few changes, with the 43mm inverted front forks, and the rear Unit Pro-Link suspension pioneered in MotoGP. The wheels are 550g lighter together, and Dunlop Sportmax Qualifiers or Bridgestone BT015 are recommended another clue that this is more a race bike than a street bike. This is a huge change for the CBR1000RR, and Honda believe the new Fireblade will not only be able to take on the R1, GSX-R1000 and ZX-10R but also beat those bikes in straight out performance. The 2008 blade was launched to much hullabaloo at the Paris Motorcycle show in 2007 to much criticism about the radical new design. But having seen it in person, I have to say, the photos don't do it justice. This is one aggressive bike. I like it a lot.
