What a weird name for a car - "Up!", Volkswagen will unveil the new city car at the Frankfurt Motor show next September. The production model that will go on show will be a three-door, four-seat city car powered by efficient three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, set to compete with the funky Fiat 500 and MINI.
VW already has a model in the "funky" sector of the market, the Volkswagen Beetle in Kent is still doing very well and has helped VW come out of its shell and be seen as a trendy brand. The Up! Will be priced from only 8,500, it will be tough competition for the likes of Citroen and Peugeot's super mini models. Volkswagen has indicated that the 2011 model will just be the beginning; they plan to introduce a 5 door model as well as a fully electric one too.
The new models will not be production ready until 2012, giving the 3 door variant plenty of time to make its mark. The interior space of the Up! is very cleverly designed to accommodate four adults, and features flat-folding, air inflatable seats. On the instrument cluster there are two small screens, one showing vehicle statistics and the other controlling the in-car multimedia system.
The craze at the moment seems to be small cars which are cool, trendy, funky and kind to the environment. In the past car manufacturers would showcase their technological advancements with high performance or supercars, these days they show them off in small, fuel efficient models.
