subject: How To Make Basketball Practice Drills Fun [print this page]

As a basketball coach, you are likely going to discover that there are many different basketball drills for kids that can increase the skills of your team. Most of the drills you can utilize are going to be skill-building drills that focus on dribbling, shooting, and passing. By focusing on these important areas of basketball, you can be certain that your drills are greatly improving the overall skills of your team.

One of the most important skills you can build in a young team is definitely ball handling. Most young children often have difficulty dealing with large basketballs due to the fairly heavy weight and large size of most basketballs. If you can keep your basketball drills focused on ball handling, it will be more likely that your team will be able to develop fairly sufficient ball handling skills throughout their practices.

The most important aspect of skill building you can focus your efforts upon is definitely shooting. Many young children often struggle with shooting, so the more you can focus your drills on shooting skills, the more likely your team will benefit from the drills you have them perform. Most children just need to spend time handling the ball in order to become familiar and confident with handling one.

One of the best games you can have your team engage in is the game of horse. When you use the game of horse, you should make sure that your players stay within the three-point boundary line in order to ensure the kids are practicing the most relevant shots they can practice. This game is very effective when it comes to training younger children, because most children find this game to be fun, but this game also challenges them to take a few shots as well. Practice makes perfect when it comes to shooting a basketball.

If you would like to improve the abilities of your team when it comes to passing, you can use the follow technique to increase their ball handling skills. Start this process by working one-on-one with one of your team's members. Tell your team member that they will be moving from side to side. Also, you should move from side to side as well. As you move from side to side, you are going to pass the ball to the team member. If you can move in random directions, this exercise can be even more challenging and fun as well.

It is usually best to demonstrate this activity to your team by using yourself as an example. Once you teach your entire team how to perform this activity, you can have the team split up and work with each other individually. The team will learn the most from this drill by practicing with many different team members as well.

In order to increase your teams overall skills, you should also make sure that they are proficient in dribbling. If you make sure that your team can dribble effectively, you can be certain they will be able to put their other skills to good use within live game's as well. One exercise you can use to increase a team's ability to dribble is the exercise of dribbling between their legs. As you have your team dribble between their legs, their ultimate goal should be to maintain ball control at all times. As your team practices this exercise, not only will their ball handling skills improve, but also they may even create new dribbling techniques they did not have access to before practicing this exercise.
