The HTC Desire Z offers both slide out and onscreen keyboards for fast and easy text input, along with the Sense user interface and running the Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system. Additionally, the handset offers a 5 megapixel camera and location based services.

The operating system allows you to download more apps to your phone, and with the combined hardware power of the Qualcomm 800 Megahertz processor and 512 megabytes of random access memory present, allows you to seamlessly run multiple apps at once. Other applications preloaded on this handset include Music for your music collection, and Gallery for your photos and videos on the phone.

The handset features an impressive 5 megapixel auto focus camera with face detection, along with a flash and built in effects including vignette and more. The camera is capable of capturing great moments as images, in addition to video recording in High Definition (720 pixel resolution respectively). Photos and videos can also be displayed back through a laptop or TV with HD compatibility through the DLNA connectivity offered by the handset. Other connectivity includes a microUSB for syncing, and Bluetooth 2.1 for close range file sharing with compatible devices, such as other mobile phones, laptops and also wireless headsets with the A2DP stereo profile, as an alternative to the 3.5mm audio jack connector present.
