Avoid Fire Damage Through Safe Cooking

Fire damage is a nasty aftertaste to the traumatic experience of a house fire. On top of having your furnishings and possessions destroyed, you may have to deal with the prospect of professionally removing and fixing fire damage.

The most common cause of house fires in the United Kingdom is cooking. This article will give you a few tips to follow to reduce the chance of you having to deal with a fire and the resulting fire damage.

Focus

The main reason house fires start through cooking is that the kitchen is left unattended. Many ovens and stoves are left unattended while the cook nips into another room.

Even if you know you will be returning to the kitchen very shortly, you are still strongly advised to never leave the kitchen while cooking. We all know how easily you can be distracted in your own home, who is to say this won't be while you are cooking?

A Safe Area

Making your kitchen a safe area to work could be the difference as to whether you have to pick up the pieces of fire damage. There are several measures you can take to keep your kitchen free of fire hazards.

Firstly, check all the wires and chords of the electrical appliances in your kitchen. Make sure the wires aren't frayed, nor should they be near water supplies. Dispose and replace any appliances that are broken.

When you are cooking, be sure not to wear long sleeves, sweaters and scarves. These can easily catch fire while you are unaware if they trail near an open flame or hot stove. Take even extra precaution when cooking with oil, as it is much more flammable than ordinary liquids.

Finally, always keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and make sure residents are aware of its existence and know how to use it. This will allow you to deal with minor fires yourself, before they turn into a more serious threat.
