The New York Animal Foster Program is very important to you and to the city of New York.

The AC&C is the only shelter in the city that has been required by law to take in all homeless animals. For this reason, the AC&C is forced to euthanize some of the animals brought in to their shelter because of space issues.

Fostering animals works the same as fostering children. As a caring citizen you will take the animal or animals into your home until a more permanent situation becomes available.

If you however, are looking to adopt these animals, that is a possibility as well. The Animal Care and Control of New York City has dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and rabbits available for adoption, so if you are thinking of getting an animal, and aren't too specific in your animal requirements, you should check out the AC&C.

Pet adoption must occur at the center though, to make sure these animals are getting a safe and loving home. You can however check their website in order to see listings, updated every day.

If you do adopt from them, you will be required to get the animal spayed or neutered.

AC&C is also aware of people who love animals but are plagued with allergies or other problems that keep them from fostering or adopting.

For these people, they offer a program called the AC&C Cage Comfort Program, which enlists volunteers to sew comforters, and small toys for the younger and smaller animals. They say that it helps ease the stress of being in the shelter, and prepares them better for adoption.

They do offer specific instructions if you are interested in helping out on their website. They also have instructions for bandannas as well, and say that these bandannas also help these animals become adopted.

If you are a NYC pet owner and would like to help out the AC&C they are currently looking for donations and would love to remind you to spread the word. They need just about anything and everything. There is a list on their site.

It is also important to note that if you are looking to become a foster or adoptive parent of these animals that the shelter takes great care of these animals, as well as cleaning, and vaccinating them before offering them for adoption to the public.

Many people also aren't aware that on average about 30 percent of the animals listed on the site are pure breeds, which may be important for some pet owners.
