Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence, in the road once know as Via Larga for its amplitude, now called Via Cavour, at the number 3 and it is the current seat of the provincial council. This building is a work of Michelozzo, commissioned by the Patriarch of the fortunes of the Medici, Cosimo the Elder. At first Cosimo asked a project to Brunelleschi, but, being a fine politician, he changed his mind because for his magnificence that would certainly have provoked the envy of fellow citizens. Cosimo commissioned so Michelozzo, an architect more discreet but equally valid, which created an impressive palace cubic-looking exterior, but simple and austere. It was the Medici Palace in setting the model of civil architecture of the Renaissance in Florence and beyond. An example of derivation is the Palazzo Strozzi.
The building was and is situated at a strategic crossroads between the Via Larga (now Via Cavour) and Via de 'Gori, close to churches protected by the family (San Lorenzo and San Marco) and the Duomo. The whole area is therefore called "Medici District. Michelozzo drew from classical rigor of Brunelleschi to purify and enrich the tradition of Florentine Gothic style. The shape of the original building was virtually cubic, with a central courtyard from which a portal allowing access to the garden, surrounded by high walls. Its facade is a masterpiece of simplicity and elegance, although there are some "exceptional" features as the use of rustication, which in medieval times was normally reserved for public buildings.
