Caring for your eyes this party season

As Christmas and New Years are almost on top of us already, most of us won't be worrying about looking after our eyes this festive season. Instead we'll be worrying about our waistline, wardrobe and bank balance. The office Christmas party is a great example of why this is possibly the worst season for us, and that's not even factoring the effects of snow and extreme cold.

You'll laugh, and drink and make merry. You're also extremely likely to get too little sleep and possibly wind up with a hangover. This lack of sleep is extremely bad for your eye health, as is consumption of alcohol which dries out your eyes. So when you're reaching for that coffee the next morning and trying to forget what you did last night, it might be better to reach for a bottle or glass of water instead. Coffee will dehydrate your further, which will make your eyes even drier. Drinking water obviously helps to hydrate you and especially your eyes.

Another common problem people encounter is forgetting to remove their contact lenses before they go to sleep. There are new contacts which allow you to sleep with them in, but most contact lenses react badly to it. During the night, you can get build up on the lenses so if you continue to wear them they will be a constant irritant for your eyes. The lens itself can get obscured, causing your vision to become obscured. Most people with contact lenses already know this, but after a few drinks forgetfulness can set in, particularly if you don't regularly wear lenses. Waking the next morning with gummy lenses scratching your eyes is just going to add to the pain.

For women there is the added obstacle of makeup, which can exacerbate an already bad eye situation if not removed the night before. Looking like a panda is rarely top of a woman's to do list, but looking like a panda with bloodshot eyes is infinitely worse. You don't need to go through the whole beauty routine, as long as you just wipe your eye makeup away so that no particles get into your eyes and damage your contacts.

Quick list of how to avoid looking like a panda with bloodshot eyes during the party season:

Drink plenty of water to keep your body and eyes hydrated

Get plenty of sleep

Don't drink too much alcohol

Put a reminder next to your pillow to remove your contact lenses before you go to sleep

Ladies: Remove your eye makeup before you go to sleep
