subject: Resisting The Overwhelming Urge To Smoke [print this page]

Smoking is a nasty habit to haveSmoking is a nasty habit to have. You know it, your family knows it, and your friends know it. You have been a smoker for a very long time, and you have decided that you want to quit smoking, but you are a little bit intimidated by the number of people you have heard about that have tried to quit smoking, and only found themselves lighting up not long after. You want to quit, and you do not want to fail like so many others. So, if you seriously want to quit smoking, then here are some tips that will help you get the ball rolling to a cigarette free life.

The first, and probably most important step is to get rid of all your smoking related items. That means getting rid of all of your cigarettes, rolling papers, tobacco, lighters, ash trays, and anything else you use to smoke. You need to tell yourself that smoking is out of your life and that you no longer welcome nicotine. This is the only way you break yourself from thinking of smoking as just another part of your daily routine. This will be very difficult to do, but it is the most important part of the process of quitting.

The next thing you need to do is work on building up your will power to not even think about smoking. A good way to do this is to survey the number of times you are tempted to smoke, and instead of smoking, use that time to do something else. If you have a hobby you like to do, then take the time to work on that hobby a little bit. This is one of the best ways to assure yourself that you have got better things to do than smoke.

If you are one of the many people out there who smoke simply to relieve stress, then you need to keep in mind that smoking does not actually lower stress levels. It only raises stress levels. So if you really want to lower your stress levels, then simply do not smoke.

It is very important that you politely ask any friends or family members that smoke to not do so around you, as it will boost your temptation to smoke, and that would be taking a major step backwards from your goal. Just remember that while it is very difficult to quit, it is not impossible, and that a smoke free life is one worth having.
